A Message from Tracy Slocum: Women’s History Month
Last month, Pretty Rugged packed up and attended our first trade shows of the year, NY NOW, at the Javitz Center in NYC. I always look forward to that show, it’s where Pretty Rugged won Best New Product and Best in Market our very first time attending. This year was just as exciting as we introduced our new capelet and vest - bringing our beloved faux fur to your closet.
Trade shows are exhilarating and exhausting. Long days on your feet, talking to hundreds of people. I love every second of it.
This year we were able to capture that in a short video, bringing to life our booth and the exuberance of the Pretty Rugged team and our clients.
It’s a perfect moment to share this video as we honored International Women’s Day on March 8th and Women’s History Month. Pretty Rugged is a women-run company from top to bottom. When I started Pretty Rugged in November 2017, I knew I had to surround myself with individuals who could help propel Pretty Rugged into the company I knew it could be. The fact that we are all women is just extraordinary!
Pretty Rugged is one of 11.6 million women-run businesses in the US, employing nearly nine million people! And this month, we were featured on Good Morning America as one of 14 women-run companies. I am so proud to stand beside these other business owners! You can read more about it here.
We are a small business, our team of eight is made up of mothers, wives, friends and daughters working to break down the barriers of re-entering the workplace after children. It doesn’t matter if your kids are young, in their teens or out of the house - anytime you go back to work after time off, it takes an adjustment and it can be hard.
In my 40s I started my own business. Honestly, sometimes I have to remind myself of that fact. It’s a part of the Pretty Rugged story that I want to share - especially for women who have been out of the traditional workforce raising a family or taking care of others. As women we can so easily lose ourselves trying to achieve perfection - the perfect mom, wife, daughter, friend, you name it. We need to learn how to break the mold so we can achieve our own dreams, while helping others achieve theirs. But most important within that, we each get to decide what our dreams are - no one can tell you what it should be. You can do whatever it is you want to do, you just have to decide.
